A Community of Friends (2012)SYNOPSIS
A Community of Friends tells the story about the beginnings of the Friends of the Chinatown Library (FOCL) and the early history of the Chinatown Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library. In the early 1970s, in the midst of the Asian American Movement, the FOCL was founded by a handful of concerned Chinese Americans in the Los Angeles area. This group of volunteers mobilized people and gathered resources through their desire to have a neighborhood library to serve the Asian immigrant and Asian American populations in Downtown LA Chinatown. This "community of friends" realized their dream in 1977 when the library opened its doors in the rebuilt auditorium of a neighborhood elementary school. watch on vimeo.com
